Praying for Others

My beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:58

Sow in the morn thy seed,

At eve hold not thy hand,

To doubt and fear give thou no heed,

Broad-cast it round thy land.

Eliza Gurney was the widow of Joseph J. Gurney, an English Quaker and famed writer. Unlike many visitors to the White House, Eliza didn’t come to pay her compliments. She came to pray with the president. Lincoln later recounted the event, saying she “uttered a short but most beautiful, eloquent, and comprehensive prayer that light and wisdom might be shed down from on high.” Lincoln so treasured the prayer that he wrote her a letter. “In all, it has been your purpose to strengthen my reliance on God,” he wrote, “and I am much indebted to the good Christian people of the country for their constant prayers and consolations; and to no one of them, more than to yourself.” It wasn’t very often that a citizen came to pray with the president, but in fact, that’s what he would have liked. Take time to pray with another.
